Office of Community Food Systems Fact Sheet - Food Safety Modernization Act: Questions and Answers

The Food Safety Modernization Act of 2011 allows the Food and Drug Administration to better protect the public health by strengthening the food system from Farm to Table.  This document addresses common questions regarding the impact of the Act on school gardens and other similar small producers commonly used as sources for local food.

State of Origin for USDA Foods in Fiscal Year 2013 and 2014

This report analyzes State-of-origin data for fiscal year (FY) 2013 and 2014, which capture the States where USDA purchased food. In FY 2013 and 2014, USDA purchased over 2 billion pounds of food, at a cost of nearly $2 billion. This included both raw food products such as meats, vegetables, and fruits; products used as ingredients in further processed foods; as well as finished food products like cereal, crackers, and pasta.

Summer Electronic Benefits Transfer for Children (SEBTC) Demonstration: Evaluation Findings for the Third Implementation Year: 2013 Final Report

The Summer Electronic Benefits Transfer for Children (SEBTC) demonstration uses the SNAP and WIC EBT systems to deliver benefits to children during summer months. The evaluation examined the impact of a $30 per child per month benefit on child, adult and household food security relative to a $60 monthly benefit. It found that the $30 benefit was as effective in reducing the most severe category of food insecurity among children during the summer as the $60 benefit. However, the $30 benefit was only about half as effective as the $60 benefit at reducing the less severe but more prevalent food security among children. Results were similar across SNAP and WIC sites.

Hunger and Obesity - Understanding a Food Insecurity Paradigm

The Workshop on Understanding the Relationship Between Food Insecurity and Obesity, held in Washington, DC, from November 16 to 18, 2010, was designed to provide an opportunity to explore and illuminate the relationship between food insecurity and obesity, the current state of research, and data and analyses needed to advance understanding of the relationship as a way of countering both hunger and obesity in the United States. This is the workshop summary of the National Academies Institute of Medicine (IOM), Food and Nutrition Board, which was commissioned by the USDA Food and Nutrition Service. Assessing the Food Security and Diet Quality Impacts of FNS Program Participation

To explore other options for assessing impacts, FNS awarded a contract1 to Abt Associates Inc. to consider the potential for using nonexperimental (survey-based) research designs. The objective of such research would be to provide FNS with new information on: Experiences and satisfaction of participants in FNS programs, and Impacts of program participation on food security, diet quality, and other indicators of household well-being.

Obesity, Poverty, and Participation in Nutrition Assistance Programs

The national nutrition safety net consists of 15 programs that provide millions of low-income Americans access to a healthy and nutritious diet. It has been observed that many low-income individuals are both overweight and participants in one or more nutrition assistance programs. This has led some to question whether participation in the nutrition assistance programs contributes to the growing problem of overweight and obesity. This report presents the conclusions of an expert panel convened by the Food and Nutrition Service to determine if there is scientific evidence of a relationship between program participation and excess weight.

WIC Infant Feeding Practices Study

This publication is based on the WIC Infant Feeding Practices Study (WIC-IFPS) sponsored by the Food and Nutrition Service (FNS) of the United States Department of Agriculture. The WIC-IFPS is a one-year longitudinal study, which describes the infant feeding practices over the first year of life among a nationally representative sample of approximately 900 mothers who participated in WIC while they were pregnant.
