Notice to Stakeholders: FNS 50th Anniversary – A Renewed Commitment to Our Future

On August 8, the USDA Food and Nutrition Service celebrated 50 remarkable years of service dedicated to improving the lives of Americans through our nation’s vital nutrition programs.  It was a special moment to reflect on how these valuable programs, and the laws that authorize and shape them, have grown and evolved to meet changing food and nutrition needs, always with an eye to good stewardship.

You can watch the webcast online to learn more about this agency’s robust history.

I am pleased to salute our public servants, both past and present, for their dedicated efforts in leading and administering these programs in support of our mission. I share their pride in FNS’s role as the first line of defense against hunger and poor nutrition.

FNS 50th Anniversary

FNS is actively investing in a bright future for Americans of all ages by equipping them with the tools, skills, and motivation to choose and enjoy a healthful diet. We are expanding access to locally-grown foods with Farm to School grants, empowering local schools with additional options to serve healthy and appealing meals, enhancing SNAP with online purchasing and new technologies, and launching the Start Simple with MyPlate campaign as just a few recent examples.

Our current priorities focus on operating the programs with integrity, offering exemplary customer service, and guiding participants towards successful lives of self-sufficiency. We cannot do this alone; everyone at FNS, myself included, knows that we are building on decades of service of many others. This includes not only our predecessors at the agency, but the many organizations delivering services in communities across the nation, and the partners that support and advocate for these programs from many vantages.  Together, we have shaped a half-century of success in serving the nation by offering a helping hand to those in need.

Thank you for joining us on this journey. We welcome your partnership, now and into the future, as we continue to serve this nation well.

With gratitude,

Brandon Lipps
USDA Acting Deputy Under Secretary for Food, Nutrition, and Consumer Services
