What’s New in the USDA DoD Fresh Program?

This webinar discusses recent updates and provides guidance on the USDA Department of Defense (DoD) Fresh Fruit and Vegetable Program. Topics covered include: program allocations, adding new schools to Fresh Fruits and Vegetables Order Receipt System (FFAVORS), receipting orders in FFAVORS, and managing School Food Authority (SFA) expectations. This webinar is intended for FNS regional office and State Distributing Agency staff who manage USDA Foods in Schools programs.

Employment and Training Resources Available to States

The SNAP Employment and Training (E&T) program, administered by all 53 state agencies, helps participants gain the skills, training, or work experience they need to enter, reenter, or remain in the workforce. The program is flexible. State agencies can tailor services and supports to the needs of SNAP participants and the communities in which they live. State agencies can, and should partner with other state and federal workforce programs to offer a continuum of services that help low-income Americans work toward self-sufficiency.

USDA DoD Fresh Fruit and Vegetable Program

The United States Department of Agriculture (USDA) Department of Defense (DoD) Fresh Fruit and Vegetable Program allows schools to use USDA Foods entitlement dollars to buy fresh produce. The program is operated by the Defense Logistics Agency (DLA) at the Department of Defense. In school year (SY) 1994-1995, the program began as a pilot in eight states; $3.2 million of produce was delivered to schools. Today, schools in 48 states, the District of Columbia, Puerto Rico, the Virgin Islands, and Guam participate in the program. USDA DoD Fresh allocations may be changed throughout the year and USDA does not impose a cap on the amount of entitlement used through this program.

Meal Service During Unanticipated School Closures

The purpose of this memorandum is to provide updated guidance on the child nutrition program flexibilities available during unanticipated school closures. Schools may face unanticipated closures due to natural disasters, unscheduled major building repairs, court orders relating to school safety or other issues, labor-management disputes, or, when approved by the state agency, a similar cause. Unanticipated school closures prevent children from receiving educational instruction and the nutritious meals they would normally receive. The Food and Nutrition Service encourages school food authorities participating in the National School Lunch Program and/or the School Breakfast Program, institutions participating in the Child and Adult Care Food Program, and sponsors participating in the Summer Food Service Program to use the flexibilities described in this memorandum to help ensure that children do not experience a lapse in food security when extreme weather or other events force area schools and child care facilities to close.

Integrated Food Management System (IFMS)

The Integrated Food Management system (IFMS) includes the replacement of the Automated Inventory System (AIS) used in the Food Distribution Program on Indian Reservations (FDPIR). Long range plans include combining the functions of the food ordering systems Web Based Supply Chain Management (WBSCM) and Fresh Fruits and Vegetables Order Receipt System (FFAVORS).
