In this, the second webinar of the series, Julia Govis from University of Illinois Extension shared information about how she is leading farm to school in Illinois through the development of educational resources and curriculum to support Extension work in its diverse program areas. Morgan Taggart from Ohio State University Extension described how OSU Extension has prioritized involvement in farm to school and how other Extension professionals in urban and suburban areas can be involved with farm to school related activities.

Administrative Review: Special Provision Options

Farm to School Education and Curriculum Integration

For this farm to school planning webinar, we were joined again by Danielle Pipher of Vermont FEED/Shelburne Farms for a presentation about the creative farm to school curricula that she has seen and helped all sorts of stakeholders (not just teachers!) develop to engage students inside and outside of the classroom. Many of Danielle's examples come directly from a graduate level professional development course called "Curriculum Connections: School Gardens, Nutrition Education & The Common Core" that she has taught for the past 3 years. We also heard from Keenan Haley, a 3rd grade teacher at Sharon Elementary School in Vermont, who shared his firsthand experiences putting farm to school lessons to action. Finally, we called on a few of our planning grantees (Cheney Schools, Ezra Baker School, and West New York Schools) to talk about the progress they have made in developing food, agriculture, and nutrition-related curricula, bringing students on farm field trips, and engaging kids in the garden.

In this webinar, the first in a four-part series, Emily Jackson of Appalachian Sustainable Agriculture Project shared outcomes from a tri-state project that examined the roles of Cooperative Extension in farm to school. She was joined by Teresa Wiemerslage from Iowa State University Extension and Outreach who shared how she is supporting local food procurement, school wellness, and youth engagement in Northeast Iowa.

The U.S. Department of Agriculture (USDA) Food and Nutrition Service (FNS) began the rollout of updated nutrition standards for the School Breakfast Program at the start of the 2013-14 school year. In recognition of the important role breakfast plays in every child's day, the President's Council on Fitness, Sports, and Nutrition (PCFSN) is highlighting the many benefits of eating a school breakfast as part of its back to school campaign. Together, we are coordinating efforts to ensure that the message reaches as many parents, students, school officials, and community leaders as possible. We cannot accomplish this task alone and invite you to learn more about our recent activities and see where they might complement your own.

The purpose of this webinar session is to acquaint the audience with FNS' updated toolkit resources for use in conjunction with the School Breakfast Program (SBP). The toolkit is a collection of digital materials targeted towards school food service directors who are seeking to establish or expand the SBP at one or more serving sites. It contains information on how to identify the most appropriate means of providing breakfast service at a given site, provides basic guidance on budgeting and menu planning, and includes marketing materials and strategies for generating buy-in among the many stakeholders within the community and school environment whose cooperation is a necessary ingredient in a successful school breakfast operation.
